What was your role in pre-production and what did you do?
I wrote the script and the storyboard, pitching my ideas and compromising what the shoot will be.
What was your role on the shoot?
Director, directing and coordinating the shoot while knowing what I wanted the final product to look like
How well prepared do you feel we were for the shoot?
Very prepared, everyone was briefed beforehand, we had all of the necessary props and a thorough schedule
What changes had to be made and why?
We didn’t bring a wig to the hotel meaning we had to change how the singer looked. Various script changes were made last minute after we decided against them.
Briefly explain what happened each day of shoot.
On day one, we filmed the Suntory Time scene, the lift scenes and the karaoke scene in the pop up film studio. We then braked for lunch and got taxis to the hotel, where we shot the hotel and the hotel exterior shots until 5.
On day two , we took the metro to st James park, where we filmed the temple scenes. We then took a taxi to Jesmond Dean where we shot the shoe tree scenes. In the taxi back, we got the scenes of Newcastle. We braked for lunch, then filmed the party scenes in pop up, before filming the running though streets and the hug scene. After this, we went into the upper floors of the building society to film the bar scenes before wrapping.
What equipment and skills did you need to apply to the role?
Mainly my equipment was the storyboard and everyone else’s equipment.
Did you have any feedback or advice from tutors / others on set?
Yes, James advised me to leave the camera rolling for longer than I think, to give me room in the edit. This was very helpful.
In what ways did you improve your own knowledge and skills?
I became more confident and in my directing ability and learned a lot about cinematography and working with a small crew as opposed to alone.
Who did you work with on set?
Everyone
How do you feel you worked with others on set?
I feel I worked well, not being overbearing but coordinating everyone well. I also think I contributed to a positive atmosphere
What did you learn about how a film crew work together on a shoot?
I learned that a film crews roles are less well defined than I thought. Everyone is working to complete a goal and everyone helps everyone else.
